Tips for printing a QR code that scans
- Print it at least 2 × 2 cm (about 0.8 inch). Make it bigger if people will scan from far away. Roughly, 1 cm of QR code per 10 cm of scanning distance.
- Keep dark modules on a light background with strong contrast. Inverted or low-contrast colours fail on many phones.
- Leave the white border around the code. It is part of the QR code and helps cameras find it.
- Shorter links make simpler codes that scan faster, so use a short URL if your link is very long.
- Always test the printed code with two different phones before printing in bulk.
Static vs dynamic QR codes
A static QR code, like the ones made here, stores your link or text directly in the pattern. It is free, never expires, and keeps working even if this website disappears. The trade-off is that you can’t edit it or count scans.
A dynamic QR code stores a short redirect link run by a QR service. You can change where it points after printing and see scan statistics, but it usually needs a paid subscription and stops working if the subscription ends. Choose dynamic only if you really need edits or analytics. For most menus, cards and posters, static is simpler and permanent.
Frequently asked questions
Is this QR code generator free?
Yes. It’s free with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many QR codes you make, including for business use.
Do these QR codes expire?
No. These are static QR codes: the link or text is stored inside the code itself, so it keeps working forever and doesn’t depend on this website.
Can I change the link after printing?
Not on a static QR code, because the link is part of the pattern. If you may need to change it later, point the QR code at a page you control (for example your own website or a Google Doc) and update that page instead.
Can I track how many people scan my QR code?
Not with a static QR code. Scan tracking needs a dynamic QR code, which sends people through a redirect service that counts each scan.
Can I make a QR code for a PDF or menu?
Yes. Upload the PDF to Google Drive, Dropbox or your website, copy its share link, and paste the link here.
Is my data uploaded?
No. The QR code is created in your browser on your device. Nothing you type is sent to a server.
